Cucurbitaceae is a word you might not hear very often, but it is the technical term for a plant family that includes crops like cucumbers, pumpkins, and watermelons. These crops are big business, especially for Frey Farms, which is one of the largest suppliers of pumpkins and watermelons in the U.S.
Founded in 1992 by Sarah Frey, the youngest of 21 siblings and half-siblings, Frey Farms has grown into three distinct businesses-Frey Farms, Sarah's Homegrown, and Tsamma Watermelon Juice - and today encompasses a seven-state operation spanning Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois and West Virginia that covers approximately 12,000 acres.
