What Is Configuration Management? A Comprehensive Guide
Search IT Operations, Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024
Configuration management, or CM, is a governance and systems engineering process used to track and control IT resources, services and applications across an enterprise.
When properly implemented, configuration management ensures that an organization knows what technology assets are available, how its technology assets are configured and how those items relate to one another.
The CM process seeks to identify and track individual configuration items (CI) and document their functional capabilities and interdependencies. A CM tool helps a business enforce a desired configuration state for each item and provides timely alerts of any configuration problems or changes -- whether authorized or not.
