Top500 this week crowned El Capitan as the fastest supercomputer in the world. It has a peak speed of 1.72 exaflops, which is about 20 times faster than its predecessor at LLNL, Sierra.
El Capitan may hold the top position for a while with no immediate challengers on the horizon. The system was first announced by LLNL and NNSA in 2019 with an estimated cost of $600 million.

LLNL, on its website, says El Capitan would be 'capable of performing more than two exaflops per second.' But it doesn't meet those numbers.
