Data Center Growth Demands Better Physical Security Standards

DataCenter Knowledge, Tuesday, May 20th, 2025

Amid growing threats, data centers need a new, multi-layered approach to physical security that integrates with cybersecurity measures, writes Rick Nee.

Data has never been more abundant and in demand. Driven by insatiable online activity, cloud computing, and, most recently, generative AI, the volume and size of data centers are exploding.

Today, the US has surpassed 5,388 data centers, which is 70% more than the next 10 largest markets combined. It's a trend that's unlikely to abate anytime soon, as data center construction is growing at an average of 15% annually through 2027.

Of course, data isn't just an abundant resource - it's also a valuable and vulnerable one. Data centers face several emerging threats, including IoT-based attacks, supply chain vulnerabilities, and other cybersecurity risks.
