Telcos Look Toward The Quantum Internet
LightReading, Friday, May 30th, 2025
Quantum computers will impact networks in many ways, creating new requirements and potentially giving rise to the quantum Internet.
Quantum computing has many implications for telcos, ranging from new opportunities to security challenges. It will also change the requirements of networks, including the need for better encryption and potentially creation of network connections capable of transmitting qubits - the basic units of information in quantum computing.
In the future, the technology may give rise to quantum Internet, meaning a network enabling communication between quantum devices. This would most likely run parallel with the traditional Internet rather than replacing it, according to Saif Al-Kuwari, director at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University's Qatar Center for Quantum Computing.
