Cybercriminals continue to up their ante, and organizations everywhere feel the impacts. Our 2025 Global Threat Landscape Report revealed a sharp escalation in the scale and sophistication of cybercriminal operations worldwide.

Automation is reshaping threat behavior at all stages of the attack chain-in the reconnaissance phase, adversaries launched over 36,000 automated scans per second in 2024, a 16.7% increase. In addition to scanning for exposed ports, these scans probe deep into cloud APIs, operational technology, SIP-based VoIP systems, and more. Automation is also fueling scale, with our FortiGuard Labs team observing 97 billion exploitation attempts in just the second half of 2024. The dark web also continues to fuel attacks, giving cybercriminals everything they need-from stolen credentials to turnkey attack kits-to successfully infiltrate a network.
