AI gear is notoriously denser than traditional data center equipment, and all that weight is starting to impact data center design.
The all-consuming headache data center operators have been dealing with regarding AI hardware has been power and cooling, with too little of each. But there is another problem creeping up on data center operators, and that is the weight of the equipment.
AI server racks are significantly denser than standard compute racks. That means a lot more power, but it also means a lot more metal and plastic crammed into a single space. The result is an increase in the weight of the equipment, which is impacting data center design and construction.
