Rethinking Embedded IoT Security: Why Traditional IT Protections Fall Short

Secuity Boulevard, Wednesday, August 13th, 2025

In an era where billions of connected devices form the nervous system of critical infrastructure, embedded IoT systems have become prime targets for cybercriminals, particularly given their enormous collective attack surface.

IoT Analytics projects that the number of connected IoT devices will reach 18.8 billion by the end of 2024, up from approximately 16.6 billion at the end of 2023. This number is likely to continue growing, with the forecast also predicting as many as 40 billion devices by 2030. However, unlike traditional IT systems, embedded systems present a host of unique security challenges that necessitate a fundamental shift in how security leaders approach protection, compliance, and lifecycle management.
