The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) forms the foundation of nearly all web-based communication, enabling computers and servers to exchange information seamlessly. Whenever a user visits a website, their browser relies on HTTP to request the necessary data - such as text, images, and formatting - that transforms a server's response into what the user sees displayed.

HTTP/1.1 marked a significant step in the protocol's evolution and continues to be widely utilized today, though it has limitations that modern web demands exposed over time.
