The Cost Of Doing Nothing: Why Unstructured Data Is Draining IT Budgets
HPCwire, Friday, November 28th, 2025
Unstructured data, including everything from videos, images and emails to documents, sensor data and AI outputs, already represents up to 90% of enterprise information.
Managing it effectively has become an enormous challenge, particularly as much of it remains rarely accessed or completely unused, with organizations paying to store information at scale that delivers little or no business value.
Everywhere you look, the knee-jerk response to this situation has, on the face of it, been relatively straightforward: add more storage capacity. For decision-makers, this is typically viewed as a preferable option to deleting data that may hold latent value in the future. The increasingly expensive problem this creates, however, is that it perpetuates a vicious investment cycle in which costs rise without addressing the underlying data management issues.
