AWS Makes Sovereignty Play As Europe Rethinks Cloud Dependence

Techstrong.IT, Thursday, January 15th, 2026

Amazon Web Services has announced general availability of its European Sovereign Cloud, a move that highlights how cloud computing in Europe has become as much a political and legal issue as a technical one.

The new offering is designed to operate entirely within the European Union, addressing long-standing concerns about data access, legal jurisdiction, and over reliance on U.S.-based technology providers.

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is physically and logically separate from Amazon's existing cloud regions. Its first data center is located in Brandenburg, Germany, and AWS says the system can continue operating even in extreme scenarios, such as a loss of connectivity with the rest of the world. The infrastructure is owned and operated through a new EU-based parent company, governed under European law and run by EU citizens.
