AWS Debuts EU Sovereign Cloud For Data Residency

SC Media, Tuesday, January 20th, 2026

Amazon Web Services has announced the general availability of its European Sovereign Cloud, a physically and logically isolated infrastructure region operated entirely within the European Union to address stringent data residency and sovereignty requirements, according to The Register.

The cloud, initially offering 90 services from Germany, is independently managed by EU-resident staff under a new German parent company, with all metadata, billing, and identity management systems confined to the EU. AWS plans to extend the footprint with Local Zones in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal, while Dedicated Local Zones will offer exclusive, single-tenant environments for highly sensitive workloads.

This strategic launch responds to growing customer anxiety over U.S. extraterritorial laws, such as the CLOUD Act, and follows Gartner findings that 61% of European CIOs seek greater use of local cloud providers. Despite AWS's assurances of layered legal and technical protections, including the Nitro System to restrict data access, some industry leaders, like Airbus's digital chief, remain skeptical about guarantees against foreign jurisdiction.
