The Rising Importance Of Prompt Engineering As A Core Developer Skill

ET Insights, Friday, February 6th, 2026

Writing code is getting cheaper. Fast. The bottleneck is shifting from 'how do we implement this?' to 'what exactly are we building, under what constraints, and how do we know it's correct?'

That shift is why prompt engineering is graduating from internet gimmick to core developer skill. When AI can generate plausible code in seconds, your value moves upstream to clarity and downstream to verification. The middle, the typing, is increasingly handled for you.

I've been using one mental model that keeps teams honest: treat AI like a tireless junior developer. Helpful, fast, and never exempt from review. The 'prompt' is the brief you'd give that junior: the goal, the constraints, the context, and the definition of done. If your brief is sloppy, the output is sloppy. No amount of model upgrades fixes a vague spec.
