Shadow IT has been a headache for CIOs for decades, but when it comes to understanding what makes it dangerous, the conventional wisdom is often wrong. Yes, someone bringing in unauthorized hardware or spinning up rogue cloud storage is a problem. But CIOs at the largest research facilities in the world would tell you the same thing: A rogue wireless access point is annoying, but it's reasonably easy to find and shut down.
