Wearables Are Getting Messy. That Is Exactly What Should Be Happening

Techstrong.IT, Monday, April 6th, 2026

A recent article in Gizmodo titled 'Wearables Are Getting Very Messy' highlights a growing wave of disputes in the wearable technology market. The piece points to lawsuits, accusations of copied designs and patent fights spreading across companies building fitness trackers, smart rings and smart glasses.

The example at the center of the story involves Whoop filing a lawsuit against health analytics startup Bevel. According to the report, Whoop claims Bevel copied elements of its product design and the way its app presents health metrics, what lawyers call 'trade dress.' Whoop has also previously taken aim at competitors such as Polar Electro over the design of its screenless fitness band.

The legal tension is not limited to fitness trackers. The article also points to disputes involving smart glasses and neural interface technology, including claims that Meta Platforms may be infringing on patents related to electromyography-based input systems used in wearable computing.
