Case Study: Decision Authority Drift In An AI-Assisted Writing Workflow

The CTO Advisor, Friday, April 10th, 2026

This case study examines Decision Authority Drift, a failure mode where AI models implicitly assume control over unassigned tasks. Using the Decision Authority Placement Model (DAPM), it outlines how to re-establish governance when increased model capability creates a mismatch between system behavior and system intent.

The system under analysis is an AI-assisted writing workflow designed to support long-form technical content production. The workflow consists of three primary stages: idea development, structural drafting, and final authoring. AI is introduced as a supporting component to increase throughput and improve the quality of early-stage thinking.

In the original design, AI was assigned a constrained role. It was used to pressure test ideas, identify gaps in reasoning, and assist in structuring early drafts. The human author retained full control over the final output, including voice, tone, and narrative structure. This division of responsibility produced consistent results aligned with the intended output.
