Why Data Centers Are Turning to Behind-the-Meter Power
DataCenter Knowledge, Wednesday, April 15th, 2026
Grid queues, community pressures, and AI demand push operators toward behind-the-meter generation, microgrids, and flexible power.
Leading hyperscalers met at the White House in early March, pledging to shoulder the electricity generation costs associated with their expanding cloud and AI data centers. They agreed to a nonbinding Ratepayer Protection Pledge.
For operators, the White House's nudge is nothing new - it's consistent with pressures they already face from communities weighing the impact of next-generation facilities, often described as 'AI factories.'
