Kubernetes Won. Now Stop Pretending It's Still A Container Orchestrator

Platform Engineering, Friday, April 24th, 2026

Kubernetes has evolved from a container orchestrator into the foundational infrastructure platform for modern workloads.

Kubernetes has achieved market dominance not as a specialized tool but as the core infrastructure platform upon which modern IT systems depend. The technology has shifted from something teams added to their stack to becoming the stack itself, absorbing workloads like VMs, AI systems, and distributed agents that were previously managed separately.

This consolidation requires platform engineering teams to embrace Kubernetes as the unified foundation for all infrastructure rather than maintaining parallel systems, which reduces operational complexity and inconsistent policies.

While Kubernetes itself remains complex, this complexity is increasingly abstracted through managed services and distributions, allowing platform teams to manage it centrally. The remaining challenge is organizational alignment moving past the outdated perception of Kubernetes as merely a container orchestrator to recognizing it as the definitive infrastructure platform.
