Data Center World 2026: Power Architecture Pushed Beyond The Rack

DataCenter Knowledge, Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026

AI workloads are forcing data centers to adopt 800 VDC architectures to reclaim rack space from power infrastructure.

AI workloads are driving unprecedented rack power densities, forcing operators to rethink how power is delivered inside data centers. Schneider Electric's CTO Jim Simonelli argues that the real constraint isn't AC versus DC efficiency, but the limited physical space inside racks where power delivery hardware competes with GPUs for room. Higher-voltage 800 VDC architectures address this by reducing current, enabling smaller conductors and fewer conversion steps, allowing more space for compute.

Near-term solutions like sidecar designs relocate power conversion outside compute racks, while scalability across supply chains and operations will ultimately determine which power architecture strategies succeed.
