SCSI Block Commands-5 (SBC-5) introduces enhancements for HDD-based storage performance, management, and resiliency.
The SNIA announced the publication of SCSI Block Commands-5 (SBC-5), a new specification for Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) that enhances storage capabilities for modern data centers. Developed by the INCITS SCSI Technical Committee (T10), SBC-5 introduces several key features including failed element depopulation with data preservation, dual- and multi-actuator HDD support, enhanced host inputs to HDD actuator queue management, expanded HDD zoning support, and improved capacity-change information definitions.
These enhancements strengthen SCSI's role in large-scale storage environments by improving operational efficiency, scalability, and fault tolerance while maintaining the stability and interoperability that users expect from SCSI standards. The specification is now available for purchase on ANSI's website.
