Google's $3 ChromeOS Flex USB kit for converting old laptops into Chromebooks has sold out, validating the platform's appeal.

Google partnered with Back Market to launch an affordable $3 ChromeOS Flex USB Kit that allows users to convert older PCs and Macs into functional Chromebooks, and the kit has quickly sold out. ChromeOS Flex is an installation package that transforms outdated Windows, Linux, or Intel-based Mac laptops into lightweight Chromebooks without requiring expensive hardware upgrades or contributing to electronic waste.

The author argues that Chromebooks have been underrated since their 2011 launch, offering significant advantages over Windows and macOS including faster performance, minimal system bloat, seamless updates, and automatic backups, with most modern computing tasks now possible through web browsers. However, Google appears to be evolving the platform toward its new Aluminium OS, which will emphasize Android apps over Chrome, potentially diluting the simplicity that makes ChromeOS appealing.
