MIT-IBM Computing Research Lab Launches to Shape the Future of AI and Quantum Computing
IBM Newsroom, April 29,2026
Building on a long-standing MIT-IBM collaboration, the new lab will chart the convergence of AI, algorithms, and quantum computing
IBM and MIT announced the launch of the MIT-IBM Computing Research Lab on April 29, 2026, expanding their decade-long collaboration to include quantum computing alongside AI research.
The lab evolves from the previous MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab (established in 2017) and aims to unlock new computational approaches by integrating AI, algorithms, and quantum computing into hybrid systems. The research will focus on advancing AI capabilities, developing novel quantum algorithms for complex problems, and improving mathematical foundations across both domains.
The lab will train the next generation of computational scientists and has already produced over 1,500 peer-reviewed articles and supported over 500 students and postdoctoral scholars during its predecessor's operation.
