Adaptive Security Leadership in an Expanding Threat Surface

Security Boulevard, Wednesday, April 29th, 2026

Security leaders must focus on foundational controls and ownership clarity rather than chasing emerging threats in an increasingly complex environment.

At the CISO Inspire Summit North, security leaders discussed how the modern threat surface has expanded due to suppliers, SaaS, identities, and distributed work rather than simply more threats.

The key insight is that many cyber risks are familiar control failures occurring at greater scale and speed, suggesting organizations should strengthen fundamentals like identity, ownership, visibility and resilience rather than over-engineer new controls.

Adaptive security leadership requires making controls explicitly owned, validated and tested in practice-with visibility alone insufficient for assurance. Complexity itself has become a risk, and Zero Trust should be viewed as a continuous discipline of strong identity, least privilege and validation rather than a finished destination.
