QR Code Phishing Surges 146% As Microsoft Detects And Analyzes 8.3 Billion Phishing Threats In Q1 2026

TechRadar, Friday, May 1st, 2026

Microsoft reports a 146% surge in QR code phishing attacks among 8.3 billion detected threats in Q1 2026.

Microsoft's Q1 2026 Email Threat Landscape report reveals a significant 146% increase in QR code phishing (quishing) attacks as attackers adapt to bypass improved security defenses. Attackers are shifting tactics to use QR codes delivered via PDF files and direct email embedding, along with increased CAPTCHA-based attacks and business email compromise schemes.

The report analyzed over 8.3 billion phishing emails and noted that QR code attacks are particularly effective because they move victims to mobile devices outside protected enterprise environments. Microsoft recommends enhanced security measures including phishing-resistant MFA, employee training, and proper configuration of Exchange Online Protection and Microsoft Defender tools.
