The DSPM Promise vs the Enterprise Reality

CIO, Thursday, April 30th, 2026

DSPM tools promise data security but face challenges in discovery, governance, classification, integration, and alert management in real enterprises.

Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) tools struggle to deliver on their promise in enterprise environments due to multiple practical challenges beyond technology. Organizations face difficulty discovering data sprawled across hybrid and multi-cloud systems, and lack clear ownership models to remediate findings once discovered.

Most enterprises lack current data classification frameworks needed for DSPM effectiveness, forcing implementation teams to build these from scratch. Integration complexity is systematically underestimated, as DSPM tools must work across hundreds of heterogeneous data stores with varying API compatibility and coverage gaps.

Finally, alert fatigue sets in quickly as fully operational DSPM deployments generate overwhelming volumes of findings that security teams cannot absorb, requiring careful risk prioritization strategies that most organizations have not developed.
