Why Businesses Are Shifting From Cloud To On-Prem Amid The Agent Boom

TechRadar, Thursday, April 30th, 2026

Organizations are moving AI workloads from cloud to on-premises infrastructure due to rising costs and performance benefits.

As AI agents become more prevalent in enterprises, businesses are reconsidering their cloud-first strategies due to escalating costs from GPU compute, API calls, and data transfer fees.

On-premises infrastructure offers advantages including lower long-term costs through fixed capital investments, improved performance with dedicated hardware eliminating latency, better data sovereignty and compliance for sensitive information, and the ability to run smaller, more efficient AI models.

Rather than abandoning cloud entirely, forward-looking companies are adopting hybrid approaches that use on-prem systems for continuous AI workloads, internal copilots, and sensitive data analysis while reserving cloud resources for large-scale training and burst workloads requiring massive GPU resources.
