Using Quantum to Understand The OS Of The Universe

IBM Research, Thursday, May 7th, 2026

IBM Research demonstrates practical quantum computing applications in molecular simulation, fusion energy, and materials science.

IBM Research showcased quantum computing's real-world impact at the 2026 Think conference, highlighting how quantum-centric supercomputing (QCSC) is solving previously intractable problems.

Cleveland Clinic and RIKEN successfully simulated a 12,635-atom protein complex with 210-times accuracy improvement, while Oak Ridge National Laboratory used QCSC to model tritium production for fusion reactors.

Q-CTRL achieved materials simulations 3,000 times faster than classical methods while maintaining accuracy. These breakthroughs demonstrate that useful quantum computing has transitioned from theoretical promise to practical application, enabling scientists and businesses to accelerate discovery in molecular biology, energy production, and materials science.
