Microsoft celebrates World Passkey Day by highlighting progress in passwordless authentication and commitment to eliminating phishable credentials.
The company reports that FIDO Alliance estimates 5 billion passkeys are already in use worldwide, with hundreds of millions of Microsoft users signing in with passkeys daily.
Microsoft is expanding passkey support across its ecosystem, including new features like synced passkeys in Microsoft Entra ID, passkeys for Windows devices, and enhanced account recovery using government-issued ID verification.
Additionally, Microsoft plans to remove security questions as a password reset option in January 2027 to reduce attack surfaces as AI-powered cyberattacks become increasingly automated.
