Why Energy Infrastructure Is the Critical Path for AI Data Centers

A power-first methodology prioritizing energy infrastructure access is emerging as essential for accelerating AI data center deployment.
As AI workloads evolve rapidly in six-month cycles while data center construction takes 18-24 months, energy infrastructure has become the critical bottleneck in deployment timelines. A Deloitte survey found that 72% of power and data center executives consider power and grid capacity extremely challenging obstacles, making legacy site selection practices ineffective.
The solution involves adopting a power-first methodology that prioritizes securing utility capacity and stranded power assets before site selection, leveraging innovative power purchase agreements, and establishing early partnerships with equipment vendors. This approach could unlock up to 5 GW of capacity and enable deployment of 100 MW within 12 months with 25 MW additions quarterly, far exceeding conventional methods' capabilities.
