Red Hat and Veeam: Driving Industry Innovation Together for Kubernetes Storage and Backup Performance

Veeam Blog, Wednesday, May 13th, 2026

Red Hat and Veeam collaborate on storage-agnostic Change Block Tracking (CBT) for KubeVirt to improve VM backup performance on OpenShift Virtualization.

Red Hat and Veeam are advancing storage-agnostic Change Block Tracking (CBT) for KubeVirt to enable faster, more efficient VM backups at scale on OpenShift Virtualization. CBT significantly improves backup performance by allowing backup applications to read only changed data rather than scanning entire disks, reducing storage load, compute requirements, and network throughput-with potential improvements of 40x or more depending on data churn rates.

The two companies, who maintain a Premier Partner relationship, are jointly designing and testing this capability through Virtualization Enhancement Proposals (VEP-25 and VEP-26), with technical preview expected later in 2026. This collaboration further solidifies OpenShift and Veeam Kasten as enterprise-grade solutions for managing both containerized applications and virtual machines on a single Kubernetes platform.
