AI Saddles CIOs with New Make-or-Break Expectations

CIO, Tuesday, May 12th, 2026

CIOs face heightened expectations to build AI teams, lead organizational change, and drive business transformation amid talent shortages.

Today's CIOs are navigating a make-or-break moment with expanding expectations beyond traditional IT management, including AI fluency, change leadership, and the ability to build expert AI teams. While 81% of surveyed IT leaders express confidence in deploying AI, 75% acknowledge their operating models must fundamentally change within 12-18 months, revealing a gap between ambitions and capabilities.

The talent shortage remains a critical challenge, with CIOs advised to hire new talent, retrain existing employees, and partner with external providers while strengthening HR relationships.

Industry leaders emphasize that success requires repositioning the CIO role from cost center and systems operator to capability builder and strategic decision-shaper, with focus on augmenting jobs rather than replacing workers and measuring outcomes beyond mere adoption rates.
