G7 Countries Release AI SBOM Guidance

SecurityWeek, Thursday, May 14th, 2026

G7 government agencies published joint guidance for creating software bill of materials (SBOM) for AI systems.

Government agencies from G7 countries and the European Union released joint guidance titled 'Software Bill of Materials for AI Minimum Elements' to help organizations enhance transparency in their AI systems and supply chains.

The guidance outlines seven main clusters that should be present in an AI SBOM: metadata, models, key performance indicators (KPI), infrastructure, security properties, system level properties, and dataset properties.

The document provides actionable guidelines for AI developers and deployers to track vulnerabilities and reduce risks, though the authoring agencies noted these minimum elements are not mandatory and are open to further refinements. Industry experts noted that while the G7 framework raises the right requirements, continuous and automated SBOM generation tools have not yet caught up with the complexity of modern AI-assisted development.
