Open Source Contribution is About More Than Just Altruism

DevOps.com, Monday, May 11th, 2026

Organizations should contribute to open source software for practical business benefits, not just altruism.

While 28% of organizations use open source software without contributing, the article argues that contribution is a practical business strategy rather than a moral obligation. Organizations that contribute to open source projects report 2x to 5x returns on investment and benefit from faster development speeds, better hiring, and earlier visibility into project changes.

Non-contributing organizations waste resources maintaining private forks and building workarounds, while missing opportunities to influence project direction and strengthen their technical ecosystems. Participation including code, documentation, testing, and community support creates stronger feedback loops and closer alignment with upstream projects.
