Not So Fast On That Charge For 800 Volt Datacenter Power

Schneider Electric expects only 10% of new AI nodes to adopt 800-volt power by 2030, despite NVIDIA's push for the technology.
While NVIDIA is promoting 800-volt power architecture for datacenters to enable 1 MW racks, Schneider Electric executives predict a slower adoption rate, with only about 10% of new AI nodes moving to this high voltage by 2030.
The shift to 800 volts addresses practical challenges with conventional 48-volt systems, including cable congestion and power distribution limitations in high-density racks. Initial deployments will use sidecar solutions starting late 2026, with more centralized power distribution systems expected by 2029.
Additionally, Schneider Electric argues that liquid cooling technology and strategic location choices make water consumption a choice rather than a requirement for AI datacenters, potentially addressing community concerns about environmental impact.
