For decades, cybercrime monetization has been brutally simple. Hackers stole credit cards and sold them. They stole credentials and used them. They stole personal data and enabled identity fraud, account takeover, business email compromise, tax refund fraud, health care fraud, SIM swaps, wire transfers and synthetic identity schemes. Then came ransomware: encrypt the data and demand payment.
