Apache Iceberg V4: Iceberg Summit 2026 Recap

Snowflake, Thursday, June 4th, 2026

Iceberg Summit 2026 revealed that Apache Iceberg adoption is settled; focus shifts to V4 innovations for streaming, AI, and improved table portability.

At Iceberg Summit 2026, over 600 attendees gathered to discuss the future of Apache Iceberg, with discussions centered on V4 specification improvements rather than adoption justification. The community is addressing operational pain points through ambitious proposals including adaptive metadata trees for low-latency writes, relative paths for table portability, column families for wide tables, and extensible column statistics.

The Iceberg ecosystem has matured significantly with the REST catalog becoming a central integration point, with production-grade implementations in Rust, C++, and Python enabling multiengine access across cloud boundaries.

Engineers from major companies like Google, Apple, Snowflake, Databricks, Microsoft, Netflix and LinkedIn are collaborating on V4 design, demonstrating the project's evolution from a JVM-only solution to a comprehensive open lakehouse stack.
