Anthropic Warning: AI Could Help Build Its Own Successors Sooner Than Expected

Anthropic warns AI systems could accelerate their own development faster than institutions can test or regulate.
Anthropic has released a report warning that AI systems are increasingly handling coding, debugging, and research tasks within frontier labs, which could enable future AI systems to design and develop more powerful models faster than institutions can regulate them. The company notes that Claude is already writing much of Anthropic's code, with engineers shipping eight times as much code per quarter on average.
Rather than depicting a movie-style robot rebellion, Anthropic frames this as a governance problem: what happens when the tools used to build AI accelerate the development of the next generation of AI systems? The company is urging the industry to begin preparing for this scenario now.
