The Future of Quantum Takes Center Stage at NY Tech Week

IBM Research, Thursday, June 4th, 2026

IBM and academic partners discuss quantum computing's role as an equal partner to classical computing at NY Tech Week.

At New York Tech Week, IBM hosted a panel featuring Jerry Chow, CTO of Quantum-Centric Supercomputing, alongside academics from NYU, RPI, and Stony Brook University to discuss the practical future of quantum computing.

The panelists emphasized that quantum computing will advance not through its mystical properties but through integration with existing computing paradigms to solve previously intractable scientific and mathematical problems.

Key applications include chemistry and materials science simulations, with recent breakthroughs like IBM's protein complex simulation containing over 12,000 atoms demonstrating tangible progress. Beyond hardware, the panelists stressed that algorithms, platforms, and quantum networking-leveraging quantum entanglement for secure, unbreakable communication-will be crucial to making quantum computing truly useful.

IBM encourages broader education and experimentation through its Quantum Platform and free masterclasses, positioning the convergence of AI and quantum computing as a significant opportunity in fundamental discovery.
