The Workforce Identity Crisis: Trust in the Age of Deepfakes

Security Boulevard, Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026

Deepfakes are letting attackers impersonate people, exposing that identity systems verify credentials but not the human behind them.

The piece warns that deepfake and AI-enabled identity attacks have become mainstream, citing Gartner research that 62% of organizations experienced such an attack in the past year.

Despite heavy investment in Zero Trust, SSO, MFA, privileged access management and passkeys, most identity systems verify credentials, devices and sessions rather than the actual human, leaving a gap attackers exploit.

Adversaries bypass technical controls by convincingly posing as job candidates, employees, executives and IT support callers; in one survey, 59% of talent acquisition leaders worried about deepfake video or audio impersonation.

The recommended path forward is a new standard that authorizes the human, not just the credential, adding identity-proofing and liveness verification across the workforce lifecycle.
