Leaders Who Can't See Worker Problems Are Creating a 'Dignity Debt'
HR Dive, Friday, June 5th, 2026
A gap between leaders' productivity perceptions and workers' stress is creating a 'dignity debt,' a BambooHR survey finds.
A BambooHR survey reveals a disconnect: 81% of leaders report increased employee productivity while 85% of workers experience significant workplace stress. The report defines 'dignity debt' as the compounding cost of treating people as a means to productivity rather than as the humans who make productivity possible.
AI has intensified the divide, with 57% of leaders willing to terminate workers who refuse AI use, yet 54% of employees say AI regularly interferes with their work. Workers overwhelmingly want transparency (89%) and clear leadership, but 50% describe their workplace as toxic and 46% see no growth opportunities.
Meanwhile, 39% of companies have replaced staff with AI while struggling to fill open positions.
