SANs deliver superior performance and scalability for enterprise storage but demand high investment and specialized expertise.
Storage area networks (SANs) provide faster performance than alternatives like NAS through dedicated Fibre Channel connections and block-level data access.
They improve storage efficiency via pooled resource allocation and offer built-in redundancy for fault tolerance, making them well-suited to mission-critical applications, virtualization, and database hosting. However, SANs carry a high initial capital expense and require specialized administrative talent to deploy and maintain.
As a result, they may be inappropriate for organizations with limited budgets, cloud-native workloads, or insufficient IT staffing to support the complex infrastructure.
