Companies Aren't Prepared for How AI Is Accelerating Impersonation Attacks
Cybersecurity Dive, Monday, June 8th, 2026
A report finds most organizations lack adequate defenses against AI-powered executive impersonation attacks.
Research from Outtake finds more than half of organizations (53%) experienced impersonation attacks targeting executives or employees this year, and 47% encountered confirmed or suspected synthetic-media impersonation of an executive or brand representative.
The report highlights a preparedness gap: three-quarters of respondents conduct only limited monitoring or respond reactively. Additional weaknesses include poor oversight of AI agents, with just 4% of businesses fully monitoring them, and fragmented governance where digital trust responsibilities are scattered across departments rather than consolidated under one team.
