AI Is Breaking the Economic Logic of the Public Cloud

CIO, Monday, June 8th, 2026

AI workloads are pushing enterprises away from cloud-first defaults toward workload-specific infrastructure choices.

The traditional public cloud model, long the default for enterprise infrastructure, no longer fits every modern need. AI applications demand sustained high-performance compute with unpredictable costs, large data transfers, and regulatory constraints that the hyperscaler model handles inefficiently.

Organizations are shifting to workload-specific decisions, blending public cloud with private, sovereign, and specialized platforms rather than treating any one environment as the default. Success now depends less on having a superior cloud platform and more on governance discipline and the organizational capability to place each workload where it runs most efficiently.

The emerging approach is compositional infrastructure, where environments serve distinct roles based on cost, performance, compliance, and control.
