Consultant Mistakenly Deleted a Ton of Data - But Reported It as a Bug
The Register, Monday, June 8th, 2026
A consultant's faulty deletion script wiped hundreds of files, but he escaped blame by reporting it as a bug.
In this Who, Me? column, a test-automation consultant named Evan built a script to manage 600-plus video files in a client's test management tool.
Despite careful debugging with breakpoints, the script malfunctioned and deleted not just the target files but other data in the entire container. Rather than admit the error, Evan filed a support ticket framing it as a technical problem.
The vendor's support team investigated, restored data from backups, and attributed the loss to a faulty SaaS script, leaving Evan unscathed and free to continue consulting.
