Micron Shipping 245TB 6600 ION U.2 and E3.L Data Center SSDs

StorageNewsletter, Monday, June 8th, 2026

Micron is shipping its 245TB 6600 ION SSD, a high-capacity drive built for AI and hyperscale data center efficiency.

Micron announced shipment of its 245TB 6600 ION SSD, positioned as the world's highest-capacity commercial SSD and aimed at AI and hyperscale workloads.

The drive advances rack-scale storage density, reportedly requiring 82% fewer racks than HDD-based systems for equivalent capacity.

Built on next-generation G9 QLC NAND, it emphasizes power efficiency with low peak power draw and claims of dramatically better energy efficiency and faster AI preprocessing versus HDD arrays.

It is offered in both U.2 and E3.L form factors and touts sustainability benefits such as reduced CO2 emissions and energy savings per exabyte deployed. The product targets data center constraints around power, cooling, and operational overhead as AI infrastructure scales.
