Run Isolated Sandboxes With Full Lifecycle Control: AWS Lambda Introduces MicroVMs

AWS, Monday, June 22nd, 2026

AWS Lambda introduces MicroVMs for VM-isolated, stateful sandboxes to run user- or AI-generated code.

AWS launched Lambda MicroVMs, a Firecracker-powered serverless capability that lets developers run user-generated or AI-generated code in isolated, stateful environments. MicroVMs deliver virtual-machine-level isolation with rapid launch and full lifecycle control, bridging the gap between containers and traditional VMs for multi-tenant applications.

They support up to 8 hours of runtime, automatic suspension during idle periods for cost savings, and instant resumption from snapshots. The offering is available across multiple AWS regions with configurations up to 16 vCPUs, 32 GB memory, and 32 GB disk per instance.
