2026 breach data shows record $20.9B US losses, ransomware in 44% of breaches, and attackers logging in not breaking in.

This statistics roundup reports that US-reported cyber-enabled crime losses reached a record 20.9 billion dollars in 2025, with global cybercrime costs projected at 10.5 to 10.8 trillion dollars in 2026.

The average global breach cost 4.44 million dollars, down 9 percent for the first drop in four years, while the US average was 10.22 million dollars. Humans are involved in 82 to 95 percent of breaches, led by stolen credentials in 53 percent of cases and social engineering, with ransomware appearing in 44 percent.

Notable incidents include a Canvas breach of about 275 million records and ShinyHunters scraping an estimated 1.5 billion records via Salesforce, OAuth abuse, and help-desk calls.
