Beware of AI Costs Hidden in Plain Sight

CIO, Tuesday, June 30th, 2026

Most organizations lack visibility into escalating AI expenses buried in renewals, usage pricing, and departmental spend.

CIOs struggle to track AI expenditures as adoption accelerates across the enterprise. Hidden costs surface in three places: AI features embedded in software renewals (driving roughly 30% cost increases), usage-based pricing for generative AI services, and business units buying tools independently.

Nearly two-thirds of companies report unsupervised employee AI usage that escapes IT oversight. Some firms, like Cox Business, achieved full spending visibility through centralized architecture and governance, but most lack that oversight.

Experts advise starting with comprehensive inventories, assigning clear accountability, and addressing high-risk use cases first, while noting cost tracking sometimes ranks below accuracy and reputational risk.
