TLS Certificate Lifetime Changes: What CISOs Must Do Now

Shrinking TLS certificate lifetimes force organizations to automate certificate management before renewals overwhelm them.
TLS certificate validity periods are shrinking from 200 days in March 2026 to 100 days in 2027 and 47 days by 2029, driven by security benefits and post-quantum readiness.
Yet 72 percent of organizations already experienced certificate-related outages and only 32 percent have inventoried their cryptographic assets.
CISOs are urged to inventory certificates, automate lifecycle management, and build crypto-agility. The September-October 2026 renewal wave is expected to be a wake-up call for unprepared organizations facing costly outages.
