Platform Engineering vs. DevOps: Why This Is the Wrong Question

Platform engineering is not a replacement for DevOps but its maturation at enterprise scale.
Author Alan Shimel argues that framing platform engineering and DevOps as competitors misses their true relationship.
DevOps has done its job by breaking organizational silos, normalizing continuous delivery, and shifting software delivery from scheduled events to continuous flow. At enterprise scale, however, inconsistent DevOps implementations across teams create friction.
Platform engineering addresses this by building internal developer platforms that provide a consistent, self-service path to production, with standardized templates, security enforcement, compliance automation, and observability that turn ad-hoc practices into paved roads.
